Few Broadway musicals are more beloved than The Sound of Music, and now you can see it live in a production by Lyric Opera of Chicago, with Hollywood star Billy Zane stepping into the role of Captain von Trapp. It's the story of Maria, an aspiring nun who takes a job as governess to the widowed Captain von Trapp's seven children. As she gradually earns the heart of the family -- and their father -- the von Trapps are threatened by the rise of the Nazis, and must figure out how to escape Austria. "My Favorite Things," "Edelweiss," "Do-Re-Mi," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "The Lonely Goatherd" and the soaring title song are just a few of the unforgettable melodies in this classic work of musical theater. The cast includes opera stars Christine Brewer and Elizabeth Futral, Jenn Gambatese of Broadway's Wicked and All Shook Up, and Edward Hibbert of Frasier. Learn More

What a joy to see an ACTUALLY witty script and not what tends to pass for wit in modern drama - Beane doesn't just turn a phrase, he spins it like a top. And the appealing cast is for the most part up to the challenge, though at just a few points the pacing flags short of the rapid fire delivery necessary for the scenes to truly sing. As the two male leads, Manocchio gives an effortlessly earnest performance in the hustler role while Linderberg makes for a refreshingly likable matinee idol without sacrificing any of the requisite narcissism and self-loathing. An uncluttered, enjoyable and BRAVE production (the controversial full frontal nudity is both fully realized and understated at the same time - bravo!), with dialogue you'll be quoting on the ride home and a deeper core than you might expect.
Due to mature content and language this show is recommended for ages 17 and over.
