Written on Jun 28 2012Funny history of Chicago. Parking next door is expensive, we found parking one block down for $12 all day.
Written on Jun 22 2012I took my friend from Tennessee as part of a birthday celebration and we both had a really great time. The comedy show was up to date with current events in Chicago. Would totally recommend, to either out-of--towners or lifetime Chicagoans :)
There was one wrinkle in this almost-perfect experience - it turned out that the drinks we ordered from the waiter came with a built-in gratuity in the final bill - something I have never seen, nor used to. So when the show ends and the actors remind you to tip, remember that the final bill has already tipped for you. pay attention if you don't like to double tip.
Written on Jun 20 2012My 14 year old son and I attended the Sunday 1:00 show. Metered street parking was available but limited to 2 hours so can be tight - be careful! We both really enjoyed the show. My transplanted Chicago son from the suburbs was able to pick up on just about all of the references (only a couple were adult in nature) which was great. Being a native Chicagoan, I recall as a college student so many years ago, the excitement to attend my first Second City experience and I was thrilled that I was able to share this experience with him. It was classic SC. Acting and improv was very good and I could tell that the performeers loved what they were doing. This was my second time in the new UP Comedy venue. It's small enough so that viewing is not an issue but I just have to complain about the set up of being seated with limited access to "our table". The first time, my friend was seated next to the table. We ordered drinks and 2 appetizers. It was too difficult for us to juggle eating and drinking between us. (And fair warning, by the time the food came, there wasn't enough time to consume our food and most was wasted.) This time, my son and I were seated behind two large people sharing two adjacent tables which we could not really access as we also had people on either side of us. From the previous experience I discouraged getting any food but just got drinks which we held onto until finished. Seating is similar to a movie theatre or airplane so a little too packed in for comfort even though there were a number of empty seats in the back. Maybe offer people the option to sit further back if not full?
