Full of humor and hummable tunes, Avenue Q is a hilarious look at life in New York, featuring a fantastic cast of people and puppets. In its Broadway debut, Avenue Q scored the "Triple Crown" of Tony wins, grabbing honors for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The lovable cast of characters, both flesh and felt, includes recent college grad Princeton, who moves to Avenue Q full of hope for the future, Kate (the girl/monster next door), and the colorful collection of neighbors who help Princeton discover his true purpose in life. Though of course many social ills still exist in today's society, the script is rather dated in its agit-prop 1930s aesthetic. It's interesting to see, however, and the production is solid and the performances remarkably stirring. Chicago's deep talent pool is well represented.
Waiting for Lefty is one of the most celebrated and significant plays of the modern American theatre. Set in the Depression era, and dealing with the cynical exploitation of the working class, this powerful exploration of the human spirit and the resilience of the American family still holds significance with audiences today.
