Pulitzer Winner The Gin Game: Lonely Hearts Card Club
Gin rummy becomes a metaphor for life in D.L. Coburn's Pulitzer-winning play, The Gin Game. Two elderly nursing home residents, lonely and friendless, decide to pass the time by playing gin together. Weller, a surly old man, teaches Fonsia, a prim and withdrawn woman, how to play the game. As they play, they begin to reveal intimate details of their lives, and Weller becomes increasingly frustrated when he can't seem to beat his pupil. What started as an innocent pastime becomes a battle, as each player attempts to expose and humiliate the other using as weapons the secrets they've shared.
