Following its hit run last fall, the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical Next to Normal returns to the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati. This musical recounts the tale of an everyday suburban family trying to cope with the mom's bipolar condition, which has her fluctuating between sanity and madness. The score, by composer Tom Kitt and lyricist/book writer Brian Yorkey, features 30 original songs including "Just Another Day," "You Don't Know" and "Superboy and the Invisible Girl." Next to Normal was praised in its Broadway run as "much more than a feel-good musical; it is a feel-everything musical" by The New York Times.

I thought this was some of the finest theater I have seen in Cincinnati. Truly amazing, gifted actors and those voices....wow! I also was totally intrigued by being able to see the musicians. They were also top of the mountain----especially the cellist.

I will be honest, I wasn't quite prepared for the intensity of the show. I was thinking that "musical equals comedy with a touch of drama". I had to do a quick mind-shift but it was worth it!!

Loved having the director welcome us and speak during intermission. I loved her enthusiasm and really felt like she appreciated that we were there. How refreshing.

Overall strong ensemble cast, with dominating vocals. Believable performances. Captivating set that draws you into the living room of the Goodmans. Definitely worth your night out.

This was one of the best performances I have seen in Cincinnati. The cast was great and their voices were outstanding. We had heard this was a great show from friends that saw it in 2011 and are very happy we attend. The set and staging were good and the venue is pretty comfortable. We have already sent out emails recommending friends see it if they can.

Excellent production with a (mostly) strong cast. Only bummer--hopefully not ongoing--was sound mix: actor's mics were so low during 2nd act (two actually seemed to be turned off) that I missed most of the dialogue and lyrics. Very frustrating!

Description

The production contains strong language and adult themes and may not be suitable for all audiences.

The Goodmans seem like a perfect family. The only problem is that sometimes Mom seems, well ...  a little too happy. Fresh from a remarkable Broadway run comes one of the most lauded musicals of the new century! With provocative lyrics and an electrifying score that includes more than 30 original songs, this thrilling, emotional powerhouse of a musical is a story about the stop/start life of a bipolar mother as she rides the sharp edge between coping and insanity.
