Two ribald operas dramatize adulterous love affairs, murder and everything in between. In the darkly comic Pagliacci, a play-within-a-play reveals the sordid underpinnings of a clown's relationship with his cheating wife. In the stirring Cavalleria Rusticana a young soldier reunites passionately with his now-married former lover, with tragic results. Beautiful voices, appealing stage sets, altogether a fine production. The only negative -- and it is a big one -- is that the four TV monitors displaying captions were horribly positioned, so as to distract the viewer from what was going on on...continued
