Pioneering theater company Arena Stage kicks off its 65th season of showcasing works from the Americas with the world premiere of The Shoplifters, a highly anticipated comedy from contemporary Canadian playwright Morris Panych. Senior citizen Alma -- a career shoplifter played by Tony nominee Jayne Houdyshell, in her DC debut -- has her life of petty crime interrupted by a battle of wills with an overzealous security guard. A cast of oddball characters, played by Helen Hayes Award winner Jenna Sokolowski along with local favorites Adi Stein (Theater J's Body Awareness) and Delaney Williams (HBO's The Wire, Arena Stage's A View From the Bridge), round out the cast in this sharp new satire. “A well-designed crowd pleaser. . .The vocal blending of the company under the musical direction of Ross Scott Rawlings is also superb. If you are looking for light and pleasant entertainment, Happy Days is a solid choice.” —_DC Theatre Scene _
“Jamie Boyle is properly understated as the mild-mannered Rickie, and Greg Twomey is suitable cartoonish as Fonzarelli. . . Jessica Ball gets plenty of deserved applause for every song she sings as the brassy Pinky Tuscadero. . . David James shows everyone how to get down on the dance floor as the teens’ aging malt shop mentor, Arnold. Ross Scott Rawlings keeps the energy level high with a five-piece orchestra that handles everything the score throws its way, from trumpet and trombone to woodwinds and drums.” —Explore Howard.com
