The Candlelight Concert Society welcomes the American String Quartet and the Ariel String Quartet, coming together to perform the great Mendelssohn Octet. The American String Quartet was formed more than 35 years ago when its original members were students at The Juilliard School. Today the quartet is internationally recognized as one of the world's foremost string ensembles. The Ariel String Quartet, originally from Israel, performs with the intensity and passion of a young ensemble, and the conviction and cohesiveness of veterans. The American Record Guide describes the Ariel as "a consummate ensemble gifted with utter musicality and remarkable interpretive power." The American Quartet will lead off with Mozart's Quartet No. 17 in B-flat Major, K. 458, Hunt; and Joan Tower's Quartet No. 1, Night Fields. Then the two ensembles join to present Mendelssohn's Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20.

Director Sergei Eisenstein's revolutionary 1925 drama, which tells the true story of a Russian battleship crew's 1905 mutiny, introduced exciting concepts of montage to the international film scene, and was named the greatest film of all time at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. The famed "Odessa Steps" sequence is one of the most acclaimed and influential scenes in film history.
