Butterfield 8 Theatre presents the British comedy Lettice and Lovage, by Peter Shaffer, the multiple award-winning author of Amadeus and Equus. Lettice Douffet, an expert on Elizabethan cuisine and medieval weaponry, is a tour guide of Fustian House, the most boring stately home in Britain -- until she begins to embellish her tours, which become more and more interesting as they stray further from the facts. Charlotte Schoen, sent by the Preservation Trust to investigate, is not amused and fires Lettice. But Charlotte's passion for history draws her to Lettice's romantic world-view, and the two women forge an unlikely friendship that helps them cope with their dreary modern lives. Learn More

Directors shouldn't appear in plays they direct. No one tells them when things dont work.

This was my first exposure to "The Tempest" and it was all good fun. It seems to be a very quirky story, but the original adaptation by one of the founding members of Butterfield 8 worked very well.
Special kudos for sound design, as it was very good and helped this attendee understand some of the plots as well as always setting the right tone; the background sounds were a delightful touch, too.
The theatre: Cue Productions is a very small facility but consistently stages terrific theatre. You can pay more elsewhere for a fancy theatre, but that doesn't detract from the quality of the actors. I have been very impressed at every show I've seen there, and The Tempest did not disappoint at all. (My companion, who is a Shakespeare fan, said it was a very good production.)
The talent: Butterfield 8 draws from a fairly small pool of outstanding talent, and they did so again with The Tempest. Becky Potter never fails to deliver one outstanding character after another; beyond his substantial acting chops, Edwin Peabody shows his excellent physical condition in a moving appearance as Caliban; Alex Murphy as Ariel showed great versatility in this multi-faceted role; and Molly Kate Taylor and David Hardie made you believe they were actually drunken, hilarious stumble-bums. Donald Hardy gives an even performance as Prospero, conjuring one facial image after another as he conjures various spells; even without the costuming he looks the part. The various other cast members do an admirable job with their roles as well.
All in all, this is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening at the theatre without breaking the bank, so hie thee to Concord and enjoy the show; it closes April 7.

Description

Believed by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone, The Tempest is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, lives with his daughter Miranda. When those responsible for Prospero's exile pass nearby on a ship bound from Tunis, Prospero conjures up a storm to force them onto the island. There, his machinations try to bring about the restoration of his lost title and status while revealing the plots conspired against him.
