It's December 1942, and New York's little-radio-station-that-could, WOV, is about to air its final broadcast of the holiday-themed Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade. That's the setting for The 1940's Radio Hour, a timeless play full of classic tunes sung in four- and five-part harmony. With its dance routines, swinging music -- including "Ain't She Sweet," "Blue Moon," "You Go to My Head" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" -- and beloved cast of characters, Radio Hour is a perfect holiday treat. "Cabaret seating" is poorly organized and the people in front shift their chairs to see,
leaving minimal viewing spaces for those in back.
At the performance we attended, a young couple had the audacity to bring a baby
with them. The kid yelled throughout the performance, distracting the audience from
enjoying the play (I'm quite certain the actors were distracted too).
The bathrooms were in another section of this community center and the ladies room
was filthy, worse than any my wife had ever been forced to use.
We walked out at intermission and will never again attend a play at this venue.
Other than that, the actors did a good job in the (lengthy) first half of the show.
Throughout the run of the show, audiences attending each performance will have the opportunity to visit Schlegel’s Cirque de Paris side show tent filled with amusements and freakish wonders. A suggested donation of $3 or more to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities is appreciated.
