Apart from a good effort by the actor playing Count Dracula, this wasn't a fun evening. The venue is one I will never go to again, even if the play is first rate. First of all, our seats were abysmal. We arrived early to pick up our tickets, then went down the street for a quick bite at La Panera (always highly recommended), then came back to the show. We presented our tickets. "Table 25? Oh, we don't have a Table 25, so just sit here." The worst table, in the back, in the corner, and facing directly away from a stage that was positioned way too low for that type of seating. It was a great view of the backs of at least ten heads with a little of the play in between. Seats are at small tables, four to a table, and very close together. Sounds ok - they sell wine and snacks so the tables might be nice? No! There is nothing elevated - all flat floor on one level. The only good thing about where we sat was that it was not as claustrophobic as it surely would have been if we had been in the middle.

The acting was mediocre at best, and the hardest part was the scene changes! The whole experience was almost three hours due to the overly long intermission and the very long set changes, which were done with curtain closed, total darkness in the theater and nothing going on for the audience. The adaptation was way off the original Dracula. It was the first time we had gone out in awhile, and I wish we had stayed in instead. Sorry, Coronado - buy some theater seating and get a new director, and maybe I'll give it another try sometime.

I really liked the play. But did not enjoy the location. The stage is set way to low. As a result if you are near the back you will have difficulty seeing over people sitting in front of you. Additionally, people are crowded at small round tables (4/table), and the chairs (though padded) are uncomfortable. I am a hard as nails type of guy, but I like to be comfortable when going to the theater. I strongly suggest a better location.

My friends and I enjoyed a fun evening out at Coronado Playhouse last night.

Coronado Playhouse is laid out with a low stage and a smallish room filled with tables and chairs. Refreshments are offered for sale in the back before the show and at intermission.

This time around the Playhouse is putting on a slightly lighthearted version of Dracula. Serious plot is occasionally relieved (and thankfully so) by comedic elements. Dracula had a sufficiently evil laugh/growl, Van Helsing kept up a Dutch accent for an entire show, Lucy and Mina were sweet and charming and Renfield did a great job providing a bit of comic relief (despite the crazy wig - or because of it?).

We walked out of the theater considering it time well spent. A good show for any of the vampire fans out there.
