This charming musical tells the story of Joe Banks, a downtrodden, joyless and chronically ill man. When the doctor tells him he has only a few months to live, he is given an opportunity to live out the last days of his life as he chooses -- on the condition that he throw himself into a volcano before his death. Cleverly adapted from the 1990 Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan romantic comedy, the story teaches the value of love, adventure and the importance of quality luggage.

We did not like the play and did not feel it was up to Lambs' standards

This volcano never really erupts into much of anything despite the gallant efforts of several highly talented cast members. The opening scene gets the show off on a track that should arrive in a much more interesting place. "joe" has amusing, multi-ethnic coreography, cool projections, creative costumes, and talented musical accompaniment for mostly forgettable songs but nothing that really ties this farce together into the real deal. Enter with low expectations and you won't be disappointed.

Very nice performance by a talented cast. Loved the island dance numbers!

This is not great art, but it is a very silly, fun, enjoyable 2 hours. The cast is excellent and, as usual, Lamb's does a lot with the little they've got. Take your sense of humor with you.

Description

Performance Run Time: 2 hours, including a 15 minute intermission

Age Recommendation: Joe vs. the Volcano is recommended for ages 10 and older. There are two startling moments -- a storm and an eruption of the volcano -- that may be too intense for some younger children, and there are a couple of uses of minimal rough language. However, many parents will find this colorful musical appropriate for their own theater-experienced children as young as 5.
