The play was entertaining and well done, but perhaps a bit slow in spots. Our front row seats were a nice surprise. Unfortunately, there was a wedding next door that night so I was happy I purchased discount tickets with being distracted by the music. Liked the unusual tables and chairs instead of theatre-style seating. Beautiful harborside community center. Take time for a bite and a walk before show.

The seating was fine. We shared a table with two other Goldstar customers wh were very congenial.

The set, music and lighting were outstanding. Most of the actors were very good to excellent. The actress playing the second wife was competent, but she talked so fast that the average viewer seated in the rear of the audience probably had difficulty in understanding her. In situations where she was seated talking with an actor seated next to her, she, too much, showed her back to half of the audience, adding to the difficulty for more of the audience to her understand her.

The venue is delightful and close to Coronado Bay Marina.

More Details About This Event:

The classic tale centers on the tribulations of Charles Condomine as he’s haunted, by the ghost of his first wife Elvira who appears following a séance orchestrated by the eccentric medium, Madam Arcati.  Elvira’s appearance throws the ordered life Charles leads with his second wife into turmoil as Elvira tries to rekindle her relationship with Charles.  But director Pete Shaner has spun an interesting twist into this classic Noel Coward farce.  Instead to visiting the British countryside, the audience will find themselves immersed in the heyday of Hollywood.

“We want to create a unique experience for the audience,” said Pete Shaner, Blithe Spirit director, “Both community theater enthusiasts who may be familiar with the play and also first time theater goers should enjoy the experience. It will be like stepping back in time and being part of the séance, the rituals, the confusion and the chaos.  We’ve created quite a few memorable surprises that we hope will breathe a new life into our production.”

Director Pete Shaner, an independent filmmaker and an officer in the Air National Guard, is a fairly recent addition to the Coronado Playhouse and theater.  He was first seen in the role of ‘Hornbeck’ in Inherit the Wind and most recently he’s played ‘Orlando’ in Shakespeare’s As You Like It.  He’s currently finishing up an independent film version of As You Like It using most of the same cast members from the theatrical production.

The play is being produced by Lizzie Mander-Wilson, who is a long time veteran of the Coronado Playhouse in addition to being a member of the board for the Playhouse.

The cast of Blithe Spirit includes Nicole Wolber (Ruth), Pete Shaner (Charles), Victoria Mature (Elvira), Jim Steinberg (Dr. Bradman), Renee Gondola (Mrs. Bradman), Amanda Everett (Edith, the maid), and Ashley Gardner (Madame Arcati).

About Coronado Playhouse:

The Coronado Playhouse, the oldest community theatre in San Diego County, was first organized as the Coronado Players in February 1946. In May 1950, Rena Kennyon directed the melodrama, The Curse of an Aching Heart, the first production to be staged in the new theatre. Since 1946, the theatre has produced over two hundred productions, 100 of which were directed by Stanley Martin, the professional director for the theatre for twenty-two years. He directed Suds in Your Eyes, based on the best selling book by Mary Lasswell, which ran for sixteen consecutive summers from 1950-1966.

Performers, stage, and technical crew are all dedicated volunteers. The Playhouse is self-supporting through box office revenues, season tickets, memberships, donations, grants, and the generosity of volunteers.
