Off the Charts is a unique show that blends stand-up comedy with science and humorous PowerPoint visuals. The show was developed by Tim Lee, a comedian with a doctorate in Biology. Tim has become an underground sensation with more than 2 million views of his YouTube videos. Tim Lee was very funny, but the real surprise was that the two warm-up acts -- Mal Hall and Jim Short -- were also extremely amusing. Usually comedy is a mediocre affair -- lots of misses and very few hits -- but all three were hilarious.

We did not expect 3 comedians, so we certainly got more bang for not so much buck! If you went by audience laughter/applause, to my ears the Australian Tim Short got the most reaction followed by San Diegan Mal Hall, but headliner Tim Lee's wry, dry and lower-key performance certainly went over well too. His PowerPoint slides could perhaps use a little more graphic oomph, but they were hilarious.
It was our first time at the Coronado Playhouse. It was easy to find, but it's a small (100-seat according to the website) venue and since it was free seating, I'm glad we got there early. We sat next to the aisle in the 4th row and it was perfect; no sore necks from looking up at the projection screen. "Will Call" turned out to be a table just inside the main doors, not at the box-office windows. Very practical, no-fuss procedure: the theatre volunteer at the table had a list of Goldstar purchasers, and ticked off attendees as they entered. No "tickets" were actually issued. Bring a jacket or wrap to wear while waiting in line for the doors to open, as there was a chilly breeze blowing off Glorietta Bay. Beautiful setting, though.

Three for the price of one!!!

All three comics were great. The theater setting was intimate and very comfortable. Coronado is very lucky to have such nice amenities.

My wife usually drags me off to these events but this one was worth the drive from La Mesa. The PowerPoint Comic's use of science was very well thought out and very applicable to life...well done.

Description

Tim wasn't supposed to be a comedian. A biologist by training, he graduated magna cum laude from UC San Diego with honors in biology. He went on to complete his Ph.D. at UC Davis. He spent years developing simulation and analytical models of population dynamics before he discovered that this bored him to tears. When he tried comedy for the first time the tears stopped. Tim Lee has performed for clubs, colleges and companies across the USA. He draws heavily on his science background to twist abstract theory into thought provoking comedy. Tim's films have screened at film festivals across the country and been broadcast internationally. He is one of the Top 100 most subscribed comedians on Youtube. He's done a commercial for the NHL starring opposite Jonathan Cheechoo and was the Spare the Air Guy pictured in TV commercials, and on posters, trains and buses.
