A 4-person revue of the best Sondheim play lyrics from the 50's - 70's. Very very well done & entertaining. Loved the intimacy & 'friendliness' of the Coronado Playhouse Theater -- small room with little tables seating 2-4 people.Written on Nov 09 2007

Pianist was superb. Sondheim songs chosen were not popular ones. Overall, the production was boring. Sondheim's songs are very difficult to sing; there were pitch problems; younger female was the best of the four; narrator should not have sung at all.Written on Oct 29 2007

Unfortunately this "musical" was very bad. Starting with the costumes, the lighting and ending with the set. The whole production reminded me of a very bad high school musical. It's a shame that such beautiful music by one of our best lyricists and composers was wasted in such a matter. Hopefully Coronado Playhouse will learn from this fiasco and give the residents of San Diego the quality of production we are accustomed too.Written on Oct 22 2007

Description
This musical revue showcases some of Stephen Sondheim’s best early pieces and displays great music, great theater and a great lyricist/composer. It includes selections from well-known musicals such as Gypsy, West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and more.
Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
With additional music by Leonard Bernstein, Mary Rodgers, Richard Rodgers and Jule Styne
Continuity by Ned Sherrin
Directed by Daniel Logan
Set in 1975, Side by Side by Sondheim is a revue, and as such, has no plot. The show was created thanks to original cast member David Kernan, who was playing Carl-Magnus in the original London production of Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. He was contacted by Cleo Lane and her husband, John Dankworth, who wanted Kernan to put together a revue of some kind as a benefit for a theatre they owned in Wavendon. Kernan contacted director Ned Sherrin and suggested that they do a revue of Sondheim material. When they wrote to Sondheim for permission, Kernan received a telegram back, saying: “By all means try, but I can’t think of anything more boring except possibly the Book of Kells.” Fortunately, audiences did not agree. Side by Side by Sondheim has spread Sondheim’s genius from the sophisticated cities of London and New York to regional theatres around the world.
There are two dates where there will be a dinner before the show. The dinner is $25 and is NOT included in the ticket price. Dinner is at 6:30pm; the show starts at 8:00pm.
