Ripped from the headlines of the supermarket tabloid Weekly World News, this hilarious rock and roll musical tells the story of half-human, half-bat Edgar, raised in a West Virginia cave by bats until captured by spelunkers and taken in by the local veterinarian and his family, who harbor a dark, disturbing secret about Edgar's origins.

Described as "Mrs. Doubtfire goes to the convent," this play takes the original hit show, Nunsense, and plays it just as it was written--but with all male performers! It's the same audience favorite comedy, in which 52 of the members of Little Sisters of Hoboken have been accidentally poisoned by the cook, leaving the remaining few to oversee their burial. The show portrays the madcap variety show they put on to pay for the funeral, featuring crazy dance routines, solo star turns, an audience quiz and comic surprises. A whole new layer of dragnificent comedy surfaces with lines like "The guys in the old neighborhood still can't believe I became a nun!" Learn More

A real solid performance. I really like the director's vision of the musical. A little dark and heavy at the beginning getting progressively lighter at the musical's end. A funny, but thought-provoking musical about acceptance and prejudices. A fantastic performance by Bat Boy (Edgar), more Nosferatu-looking and creepier than I was used to, but it was a gusty, very believable, execution that works brilliantly. Also outstanding performances by Shelly and Dr. Parker were highlighted by their fine vocals. My only negatives were that the audio was muted at times and the music should have been a bit more aggressive in the "Goth-rock" feel. This is a show perfect for the Halloween season. Support this community theater and its arts.

As always, Costa Mesa Playhouse gave a wonderful performance. Extra applause go to Ryan Hollihan who played Edgar/Batboy. Also an extra shout out to the props person! They added to the comedy. Well done.

The cast did a great job! This is definitely NOT an "Oklahoma"-type of musical and wouldn't be for everybody, but it was very enjoyable for myself and my companions. Excellent ensemble work.

More Information About Bat Boy, The Musical

Description

Full of blood, violence and interspecies romance, Bat Boy, The Musical originally premiered in 1997 at Tim Robbins’ Actors Gang Theatre in Los Angeles and was subsequently produced Off-Broadway, in London’s West End, at the Edinburgh Festival and in scores of productions around the world, winning numerous awards in the process.

The character of Bat Boy was created by former Weekly World News editor Dick Kulpa and was the subject of many of the tabloid’s cover stories, debuting in 1992. The original front-page photo of Bat Boy, showing his grotesque screaming face, was the second-best selling issue in the tabloid's history, and he has since evolved into a pop-culture icon. The play’s authors, Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, licensed the use of the character and brought in Laurence O’Keefe to write music and lyrics. Their story, which can be likened to Edward Scissorhands filtered through classic Universal horror films like Frankenstein as well as such low-budget 1950s fare as I Was a Teenage Werewolf, focuses on how a freakish outsider can sometimes be more human than the supposedly normal people around him.

Directed by Michael Dale Brown
Musical direction by Stephen Hulsey
Musical numbers staged by Ryan Holihan
