In Noel Coward's comedy about a spirited love triangle, novelist Charles Condomine accidentally summons the spirit of his dead wife Elvira during a séance conducted by the gleefully eccentric Madame Arcati. Trouble is, only Charles can see Elvira who proceeds to wreak havoc with Charles's current marriage to the jealous Ruth. A hit during its premiere in 1941 and adapted into an Oscar-winning 1945 film with Rex Harrison, Blithe Spirit opens the 46th season at Costa Mesa Playhouse. David A. Blair directs Paul Griffiths, Jennifer Pearce, Dan Henry, Norma Jean, Judy Jones, Emily Price and Danielle MacInnis.

i liked the venue, small but yet elaborate enough for all to enjoy. Hard to find this little theater, but we really enjoyed it. The woman who played Madame,I forget her stage name was the hit of the show. Great fun

Enjoyed the play greatly. It was the first time we had attended the Costa Mesa Playhouse. It was easy to get to and parking was plentiful. The theater itself was comfortable and small enough to feel intimate. It reminded me of a small London theater. The cast was very very good.

Amazing -- worth every penny ..

(No spoilers in this review :)

The length of the play is like watching a feature with some really downright fascinating characters. I want to go back and watch it again. It's like a really good movie whose actors you fall-in-love with and just want to go back and catch all their little hilarious personal nuances and interchanges with each other all over again . .

The playwright Noel Coward's tending to the "medium" world, and how others perceive it, is deliciously funny. And the actors from the leads to the mere maid are nothing short of amazing. The set itself is a surprise -- as is the really fun use of the stage during intermission -- but I'll let you find those out yourself ...

A must .. for the picky actor to the theatrical connoisseur ..

The venue looks like a college gym from the outside - but don't let that deter you .. The inside is a pearl from the actors to set design to stage direction.

And if you haven't seen a play in your life - this is well worth the drive.

Description

A smash hit on London and New York stages when it premiered in 1941, and recently revived on Broadway with Angela Lansbury, this delightful ghostly romp from the outrageous mind of playwright-director-actor-composer-singer and flamboyant wit Noel Coward spins the tale of novelist Charles Condomine, whose late first wife, Elvira, is summoned during a séance by eccentric clairvoyant Madame Arcati. Seen only by Charles, Elvira’s mischievous spirit remains to haunt him and disrupt his current marriage
