With a book by prolific Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H, Tootsie), lyrics by David Zippel and music by Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity, The Will Rogers Follies), the musical City of Angels tells the "real" world of a writer adapting his book into a screenplay, and the "reel" world of his detective story which constantly changes as the writer gets notes from his producer. The same actors play their real-life and fictional counterparts in each story.

Hedwig's story is presented through a as a rock concert/stand-up comedy gig format in which the charismatic singer takes the audience on an emotional roller coaster ride through the funny, touching, painful and ultimately inspiring experience of being Hedwig. The fantastic rock score has been winning fans and acclaim since the musical first debuted a decade ago. The musical won a Village Voice Obie Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical on its debut. Creator John Cameron Mitchell went on to star in and direct the award-winning 2001 film version of Hedwig, which became a cult hit that continues to play at midnight movies. Learn More

I have never seen a bad production at the Costa Mesa Playhouse -- until Friday evening. This was the most boring, unexciting production that I have seen there. I left during intermission so don't know if it picked up for the second act or not, but I wasn't sticking around to find out.

This was not one of Costa Mesa Playhouses better productions. The singers were not very good, acting was poor.

It almost seemed like they didn't have many actors to choose from some of the choices detracted.

Blond female lead was good.

At the performance I went to, the actors looked bored. The singing wasn't good, except for one or two notable performers. The music was slowed down to a dirge tempo. Direction was non-existant. Based on other comments here, I thought it would have been much better than it was. What a shame.

Costa Mesa Playhouse usually puts on quality productions, but this was not one of their better efforts. The few enjoyable performances (particularly Ed McBride, who is very funny as Buddy) were often done in by poor staging and choreography and a lackluster music track that slowed the song tempos down so much that the performers seemed bored singing their own songs. To top it off, the show's finale (a full cast reprise of "I'm Nothing without You")was not sung at all due to a sound glitch. To be fair, many other audience members seemed to enjoy the show a lot more than I did. However, there were obviously a lot of in-jokes aimed at specific people, who howled with delight while everyone else wondered what the heck was so funny.

I will definitely be back to see future productions at CMP. They normally do good work. I just can't recommend this one. Sorry.

Set in Hollywood in the late 1940s, City of Angels is a film noir style detective story that presents its own writer, Stine, who is having trouble transposing his book onto the big screen. In parallel, it follows the protagonist of the film, Detective Stone, on his adventures... as Stine writes. Many of the characters have a counterpart in the other world; these parts may be double cast. It is usually staged with the "real-life" scenes in "color" and the movie scenes in "black and white".
