What a pleasant surprise for fans of Shakespeare! Very interesting story that was splendidly acted! Most actors did a wonderful job mastering the accent, attitude, and flair of the Elizabethan era! The costumes are guaranteed to wow the audience with their color and style! While I do think the first act seemed a bit slow, I was very impressed and enjoyed the story quite a bit. Kudos to the cast and crew!Written on Jun 15 2009

I agree with your first reviewer. After seeing this play I was moved to research further into homosexuality in 17th Century England especially as it relates to the acting profession. I was amazed at the quality of the acting and the costumes blew me away. Thanks Gold Star!Written on Jun 29 2009

More Information About Compleat Female Stage Beauty
Description

The Costa Mesa Playhouse closes its 43rd season with Jeffrey Hatcher’s bawdy, historical comedy-drama Compleat Female Stage Beauty, about a turning point in the history of both English theater and women’s rights.

In 1661, diarist Samuel Pepys writes that the most beautiful woman on the London stage is Edward Kynaston who, like every actor licensed by law to portray women, is a man. Acclaimed for his interpretations of Shakespeare’s tragic ladies, especially Desdemona, Kynaston is a theatrical superstar at the rise of the England’s Restoration. But his world is turned upside down when Margaret Hughes becomes the first real woman to play Desdemona, in an illegal performance at a rival theater.

She becomes a royal cause célèbre and is championed by the king’s mistress Nell Gwyn (a would-be actress herself), who convinces King Charles II to declare that women are now permitted to act, putting a sudden end to Kynaston’s career.

The play is directed by Jason Holland and stars Alexander Price as Kynaston, Nakisa Aschtiani as his lovelorn dresser Maria and Kathryn Scott as first actress Margaret Hughes. They are supported by Christopher Basile, David A. Blair, Michael Dale Brown, Jessica Elisabeth, Andrew George, Ron Grigsby, Mike Krauss, Laura Lindahl, Tiffany McQuay and Cinthia Palmer.

This show contains some adult situations which may be considered inappropriate for younger audiences. Parental Review is suggested.
