After winning Best in Comedy at the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2013, Absolutely Filthy comes to the South Coast Repertory. This unauthorized spoof centers on a certain famous comic strip's minor character, a filthy child who has grown into a homeless man perpetually surrounded by a cloud of dust. Already living a difficult life, he encounters another stumbling block when he wanders into the funeral of his estranged best friend. The whole gang is there, and as he speaks with his long-lost childhood friends, he realizes that he may have an outside shot at redeeming his miserable, grimy life. Adapted as a full-length play based on the Sacred Fools serial PP@30, Absolutely Filthy takes a look at the lives of a group of characters after they leave the funny pages and head out into the real world. I was disappointed with Eternal Thou. I was expecting a more substantive exploration of the topic of the internet's impact on human relationships. The play started well with a look at the origins of the internet, but then quickly devolved into a series of vague and nonsensical vignettes. The staging of the play had some interesting technological components to it, but in the end I could not find a coherent message. I was hoping for much more, since I am an avid technology enthusiast.
