Six-time Grammy-nominated jazz pianist, bandleader and composer Fred Hersch comes to town with his acclaimed trio, featuring John Hébert on bass and Eric McPherson on drums. Hersch has recovered from a six-month coma he suffered in 2008, and is back to making music with his trio, including releasing a widely acclaimed 2-disc collection, Alive at the Vanguard. Hersch was actually the first artist in the 75-year history of New York's legendary Village Vanguard to play week-long engagements as a solo pianist, and he's been praised by The New York Times Magazine as "singular among the trailblazers of their art, a largely unsung innovator of this borderless, individualistic jazz -- a jazz for the 21st century." A wonderful performance of song and dance. The John Alexander Singers are, without a doubt, one of the premier choral groups in the country. Their singing is of the highest quality and skill. More importantly, it's completely musical. The evening included beautiful arrangements of Irish tunes, some sad and others joyous. A small Irish dance ensemble performed interspersed in the program - they were so full of energy and completely entertaining. And, to complement the evening, an Irish band with fiddles and percussion entertained before the program and accompanied the group on a couple of numbers. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable evening of top-rate music. Thank you!
