One of Broadway's most honored leading ladies, and arguably American musical theater's greatest living star, Patti LuPone performs her favorite tunes from Broadway and beyond at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. This evening of song from an unparalleled performer is sure to be memorable. Accompanied by five-piece band The Gypsy Drifters, LuPone will perform selected works from Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, Willie Nelson, Kurt Weill, Edith Piaf and more. LuPone began her rise to fame with her Tony-winning performance as the title character in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita, and has gone on to star in Les Miserables, Sunset Boulevard and Sweeney Todd to great acclaim. We are a big fan of Mathew and totally enjoyed the evening, both first and second acts. As a gay male couple (married) we were marginalized in his opening dialogue as were the female gay couples, not to mention all the young boys and girls who could have taken away a feeling of inclusion. Actually we were shocked by how straight couple centric his remarks were - not what we would have expected from him, especially in California. We are hopeful he takes this into consideration and either gender neutralizes his opening or includes the husbands and husbands and wives and wives in the audience.
