A mix of puppets, actors, and live music are artfully employed to tell a tale of friendship and enduring love. Perô and Columbina grow up together in their Italian village and fall in love. But Perô is a baker and works by night, while Columbina is a laundress who works by day. Soon a colorful housepainter comes along and sweeps Columbina off her feet. Pacific Symphony Celebrates the Rite of Spring With Music, Dance and Film

Full Price:
$50.00

Pacific Symphony performs one of Stravinsky's most influential works, The Rite of Spring, in its 100th anniversary year in a program accompanied by ballet and film excerpts. Rite of Spring is a ballet written for Paris' Ballet Russes that represented celebrations and rituals of Spring in pagan Russia. When the ballet premiered in 1913, Stravinski's avant-garde score combined with Vaslav Nijinsky's equally avant-garde choreography nearly caused a riot in the audience and sparked a revolution that changed the course of classical music. In honor of this highly influential piece, Pacific Symphony has put together a program that explores the transition of Russian ballet music from the traditional to the radical, tracing the evolution of music from Tchaikovsky to Stravinsky. The show was beautifully presented, with fine puppetry, engaging music, and entertaining actors, but the story itself was disappointing. It was not entertaining for younger children--I brought a four year old and six year old and they enjoyed it enough, but were not delighted.

The show was great. The puppeteers and singers were amazing; they really brought the show to life. The story was adorable too. It is a small theater; very intimate setting. Because it was a small theater, you can speak to the cast and come up on stage to see the puppets and props after the show. That was a nice treat.

This is a children's story, but I found it to be very sweet and whimsical. Children accustomed to hyperkinetic computer-generated explosions and 3-D garbage may not appreciate this play. The puppeteers are very talented and there is a lot of coordination involved in the movements on stage as most everything is visible. The set design is simple yet very clever. It's adorable and heartwarming and I would recommend it.
