The Costa Mesa Civic Playhouse presents Rick Abbot's hysterical play-within-a-play farce, Play On!. This is the hilarious story of a theater group trying desperately to put on a play in spite of maddening interference from a haughty authoress who keeps revising the script.

I generally thought this was a very entertaining production. Although the actress who played the maid overdid it a little and some of the dialogue was unintelligible, I still enjoyed it. Barbara Brown was just right! The most memorable and amusing moment was when Billy picked up Violet's wig, cradled it in his arms like a pet, and patted it. Very funny. Also, a program within a program for a play within a play:-)
Too bad this review won't be of any use since the performance I saw was their last.

More Information About Play On!

Description

<p>Rick Abbot was one of several pen names for astonishingly prolific Orange County playwright Jack Sharkey, who published 82 plays from 1965 to his death in 1992.  Play On! is probably his most popular and most produced.  It tells the screwball tale of a ludicrously inept amateur theatre troupe’s attempt to stage a first-play by an equally talentless local writer who constantly rewrites the script.</p> <p>
Act I is a rehearsal of the dreadful show, Act II is the near disastrous dress rehearsal, and the final act is the actual performance in which anything that can go wrong does. When the authoress decides to give a speech on the state of the modern theatre during the curtain calls, the audience is treated to a madcap climax to a thoroughly hilarious romp. Even the sound effects reap their share of laughter.</p>
