South Coast Repertory presents Sight Unseen, Donald Margulies' Obie Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize-nominated play. Sight Unseen tells the story of an artist as superstar, plunged into the exorbitant hype of the American art world where a publicist is as necessary as a brush and canvas. Jonathan Waxman is a rising star on the art scene, with a waiting list of art collectors lining up to buy paintings he hasn't even done yet. In London for his first European show, he is pushed to a state of crisis by the anxiety of this make-or-break moment in his career. He escapes to find his first love and muse, to try and capture the enthusiasm and inspiration that led him to become an artist in the first place.

My first play at OC Rep theater and was really amazing for me. Took my neighbor Dianne and impressed her big time! Goldstar did great job with the seats (Red Carpet pays off for seat locations) and the venue was marvellous. Highly recommend it....esp for art lovers and archaeologists.

Loved the play, though I thought the main actor was not really convincing.

We saw a preview, so it's not really fair to review the show, as they are still working out the kinks, but my thoughts are as follows:
- Not sure why South Coast Rep felt it necessary to revamp this play from 1991, which even then must've had audiences confused as to what, exactly, it is about: anti-semitism, artists & relationships, losing passion and hiding away? Not sure, really, what the play is trying to say. It's well written, but its story feels strained.
- The sets are a little overwhelming, very clunky, and very much upstage the whole piece. Minimalism would've served this play well.
- Actors are all fantastic except for the lead guy who I felt was miscast and as such I could not buy him as the character.

More Information About Sight Unseen

Description

Sight Unseen was considered Margulies’ breakthrough play, a commentary on what it takes to get ahead in the art world, and what gets lost on the way to success.  But it’s so much more.  Flashing back and forth in time, the play unfolds beautifully, and beneath their words, each character reveals moving and complex feelings that can take your breath away.  Everyone will be fascinated by the story but also by the intriguing relationships, which evolve in ways that allow playgoers to draw their own conclusions.

Contains brief adult situations.  Recommended for middle school and above.
