Saw the movie a few days earlier, and really enjoyed seeing how the stage play brought it all together. The use of the four locations was ingenious, although set changes took time. Very well acted!Written on Jul 28 2008

Quotes & Highlights
- "[This play by] the master of Texas comedy ... is maybe funnier than Daddy's Dyin'. His colorful eccentrics are dead on, teetering on a Bowie knife's edge between the hilarious improbable and the achingly real." --Los Angeles Times
Description
When aged Ingram family matriarch Peggy dies in a seedy motel room after tripping over the prosthetic wooden legs of her younger lover, G.W. Nethercott (who happens to be married to the best friend of one of Peggy’s daughters), all of the family’s sordid skeletons emerge from their closets and fall on the shoulders of eldest daughter Latrelle--who must not only deal with the shame of how her mother died, but also her denial of her New York actor son’s closeted homosexuality. And then there’s the matter of Latrelle’s brother Earl, aka “Brother Boy,” who dresses like and worships Tammy Wynette and has been undergoing "dehomosexualization therapy" at the state looney bin for the past 23 years.
By Del Shores
Directed by Michael Brown
The original production of Sordid Lives opened in 1996 and ran for a year at Theatre/Theater in Hollywood, where writer-director Del Shores gained a reputation for developing clever, campy comedies derived from his experience growing up gay in conservative, rural Winters, Texas. That production won 14 DramaLogue awards. Shores made a film version in 1999 that became a cult hit, particularly in the South. A new television series, also written and directed by Shores, premieres July 23 on the Logo channel, a week after the Costa Mesa Playhouse’s production opens.
