South Coast Repertory presents The Prince of Atlantis, a tender and funny play about family, loyalty and love. Set in the Down the Lake section of Boston, an area full of home-spun jargon, the story centers on Joey Colletti, one of the biggest seafood importers in the East. Joey is doing a nine-month stint in prison due to some business problems. While behind bars, a 30-year-old son Joey never knew he had comes in search of him. Joey hopes to stall his son's visit until he's a free man. He seeks his brother Kevin's help, but Kevin's resources are limited because he has a couple of problems of his own.

This was a very good play with a superb cast. It is powerfully poignant, while filled with great comic lines and lots of surprises. A wonderful evening in the theater.

The Prince of Atlantis was outstanding. May go see it again this week. I have nothing but praise for the story, the actors .... it left me thinking about truths/half truths/family secrets, etc. Hope it goes to NYC--I go there a lot too.

Quotes & Highlights

  • "Drukman orchestrates the action and revelations masterfully, culminating in a late-play surprise that brings the playwright's themes neatly into focus." --Orange County Register
  • "As directed by Warner Shook, Drukman's script has the slick professionalism of a major movie or television production ... Drukman's comedic dialogue is loose, breezy, and informal, and his characters' stories, jokes, and references are enhanced by their lively street slang/" --Back Stage West
  • "it’s a journey worth taking under Warner Shook’s careful direction, and the cast is compelling. John Capelos is hilarious as Joey, a seafood mogul whose business practices land him in prison; Nike Doukas is even funnier as his tough-talking, street smart girlfriend, Connie." --Examiner
