I've seen the show several times, mainly because it's not always the same each time I see it. He likes to change things. It really is a great piece of theater. His characters are rich, distinct, and real. He has a wide range as an actor, and the piece moves. People laugh, cry and cheer-- it's why we go to theater.

I should start this by saying "spoiler alert" for minor pieces of the play. I went to see this show based on the reviews. I found parts of this show quite touching and other pieces laugh out loud funny. Yet the direction of this show needs some reworking because too often the frenetic meter jumped off the charts. I joked with my friend that this schizophrenic show deserves 5 stars and 1 star and 3 and 2 and 4 and 3 and 2 ... you get the idea. The energy level given to the various characters portrayed by the performer could easily be backed off by half without losing the genuineness of their personalities. The best and most poignant parts of the show occurred when the Mr. Fry brought the realness of his experience to the audience through the use of newspaper articles and personal writings of his students. The least successful minutes of the show involved the portrayals of his students which had a manufactured flavor to them. Mr. Fry's impersonation of Anthony, the Latino student who acted like a black rapper, sounded more like a reprisal of Good Fellas or The Godfather. I kept waiting for him to say, "You disrespected me. You know and now you want a favor.'' The true story aspect of the show is what saves it however. Mr. Fry connected with the audience during several sections of the performance and that effort shined. I would have liked more of the calm Mr. Fry and less of the neurotic, jilted, and manic character that tried a bit too hard. Perhaps my review would have been kinder if the chairs had been more comfortable as well. With a critical eye and some significant tweaks, this could be an excellent show about Mr. Fry's journey through the school system.
