Exactly what was promised: a Balanchine masterpiece ("Serenade" from 1934) followed by two works that alluded to and extended the master's trail-blazing focus on letting the steps be the story. Next, the world premiere of company member Carl Coomer's lively and inventive "Clann." a set of character dances on Celtic themes, added humor to Balanchine's wit and mightily pleased the audience. Ben Stevenson's "L" showcased the company's male dancers, gently mocking their upper-body strength (making fists and showing off biceps) but closing with an allusion to "Serenade"'s signature raised-arm opening.
