One of America's most celebrated playwrights, August Wilson's Fences is often considered his greatest work. Directed by playwright Synthia Williams, New African Grove Theatre Company's production is a powerful drama that tells the story of Troy Maxson, a former Negro League baseball star who makes his living as a garbage man in 1957 Pittsburgh, and who's consumed with frustration over the color barrier that kept him from being a success in the Major Leagues. As he struggles to provide for his family, their relationships -- infected by his bitterness -- suffer. A truly significant American play, a New York Post critic once hailed it as "one of the richest experiences I have ever had in the theater." Learn More

We enjoyed the play. This is a wonderful movie starring Jimmy Stewart, from the 1950s or so, and it is funny and thought-provoking.The new spin on Elwood's doctors was a pleasant surprise! Suggetions; better acoustics or have cast speak louder, esp. Elwood's aunt.I'd recommend this play for all ages.
