The Value of Age: A Conservator's Dilemma
Art Expert Discusses the Perils & Pleasures of Art Conservation in The Value of Age
In the world of art conservation, cleanliness is not
next to godliness. In fact, ill-advised cleanings of Rembrandt's Night Watch
and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling have turned into full-blown "crimes against art." Even in this age of good intentions and high technology, blunders abound, partly because of the numerous factors that must be taken into account -- including the materials the artists used and pure guesswork as to how a particular artwork looked "originally." Now James Squires, renowned expert and Chief Conservator of the Clyfford Still Museum, discusses the history of art conservation controversies and presents how conservators today make treatment decisions in The Value of Age: A Conservator's Dilemma
. In particular, he will discuss how these issues inform his work with the museum's incredible trove of Clyfford Still paintings.

View nearly the entire collection and learn all about Abstract Expressionist Clyfford Still, one of the most important painters of the 20th century, at the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver's burgeoning cultural arts district. The museum's collection represents nearly 94 percent of the artist's lifetime output and includes approximately 2,400 works he created between 1920 and 1980. The current special exhibit, The Art of Conservation: Understanding Clyfford Still, introduces the field of art conservation, which is particularly relevant to the Clyfford Still collection because most of his paintings were rolled almost immediately after completion and have never been viewed by the public. Every other Tuesday during the exhibition, conservators James Squires and Pam Skiles will be conserving paintings in the galleries. You can watch them and ask questions. Learn More
About the Ticket Supplier: Clyfford Still Museum
The Clyfford Still Museum is the newest addition to Denver's burgeoning Cultural Arts District and is located adjacent to the Denver Art Museum in the city's Civic Center Cultural Complex. The two-story, 28,500-square-foot building was designed by Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works Architecture specifically to display Still's work. The museum broke ground in December 2009 and was completed in November of 2011. The museum allows visitors the unique experience to understand the legacy of Clyfford Still, an artist whose life has been shrouded in mystery and the bulk of whose work has been hidden from public view for over 30 years.
