Contra Costa Civic Theatre brings Neil Simon's Tony-nominated romantic comedy Barefoot in the Park to El Cerrito. It's 1963, and newlyweds Paul and Corie are just starting their life together in a tiny fifth-floor Manhattan apartment. He's a straight-laced lawyer and she's a free spirit who's always looking for the latest kick. Paul doesn't understand Corie's relaxed ways, and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous. Something as simple as running "barefoot in the park" would be a start. Filled with Neil Simon's trademark witty repartee and hilarious characters, watching the ups and downs of married life has never been so enjoyable.

The director's notes said he wanted to bring out the reality of the characters. Cora was like Sally Struthers on steroids, and way too randy for Neil Simon. Paul was mugging and slip-sliding all over the stage. Neil Simon does not work as commedia del arte. The Mom was the only one with a modicum of reality. The Vomit Award of the year goes to the set designer for the nauseating red wall. Cary may not be Monet but even she would have much better taste. The bright color green used on the bar was not in the not paint color charts of the sixties.

About the Ticket Supplier: Contra Costa Civic Theatre

Contra Costa Civic Theatre was founded in 1959 by Bettianne and Louis Flynn. Their vision was to establish a quality community theatre in El Cerrito . That that vision has been realized can best be summed up by what the East Bay Express recently wrote: "Contra Costa Civic Theatre . . . puts on comedies and musicals, mysteries and dramas from Sondheim to the Marx Brothers to Agatha Christie with unusually solid production values".
