Contra Costa Civic Theatre brings Neil Simon's Tony-nominated romantic comedy Barefoot in the Park to El Cerrito. It's 1963, and newlyweds Paul and Corie are just starting their life together in a tiny fifth-floor Manhattan apartment. He's a straight-laced lawyer and she's a free spirit who's always looking for the latest kick. Paul doesn't understand Corie's relaxed ways, and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous. Something as simple as running "barefoot in the park" would be a start. Filled with Neil Simon's trademark witty repartee and hilarious characters, watching the ups and downs of married life has never been so enjoyable. Learn More

Just sit back and enjoy. Re another's comment: this is a farce, it's not supposed to be believable! The score is charming, the first Ahrens/Flaherty collaboration, one that would lead to Once On This Island, Ragtime, and Seussical, among others. The company did a more than respectable job, with some standouts, and handled the multiple scene changes creatively and effectively. A successful example of what community theatre can do.

Unfortunately, the premise of the plot was just too far-fetched to work for me. The performances were good with one exception - the female lead - whose vocal talents far exceeded those of the rest of the cast. She could be on Broadway.

"Lucky Stiff" is a fun, quirky musical with oddball characters, suspense, romance and a charming score. This production is well-cast and performed, but even though the band is small (three pieces) it's way too loud for the singers to be heard consistently - and the awkward scene changes break up the flow of the show. Nevertheless, it's a worth a look - especially at Goldstar prices!

About the Ticket Supplier: Contra Costa Civic Theatre

Contra Costa Civic Theatre was founded in 1959 by Bettianne and Louis Flynn. Their vision was to establish a quality community theatre in El Cerrito . That that vision has been realized can best be summed up by what the East Bay Express recently wrote: "Contra Costa Civic Theatre . . . puts on comedies and musicals, mysteries and dramas from Sondheim to the Marx Brothers to Agatha Christie with unusually solid production values".
