One of the most unique theatre experiences in the Baltimore-Washington region returns for another summer, as Chesapeake Shakespeare Company-in-the-Ruins presents Romeo and Juliet. Arrive up to 90 minutes early to picnic in beautiful PFI Historic Park, as pre-show entertainments ranging from music to poetry to 19th century games unfold around you. Then take in Shakespeare's tragic, romantic tale of those famous "star-cross'd lovers," set amidst the beautiful Greek Revival ruins of the Patapsco Female Institute, once an elegant finishing school for young women. More a "theater party" than a typical theater experience, Chesapeake Shakespeare in the Ruins will entertain you from the moment you lay out your picnic blanket until the final curtain call.

This company is the best, full of great second-tier players, like Mercucio in Romeo/Juliet. can't wait to see more!!

The experience was wonderful. I took 2 16 year olds and 1 14 year old. We loved the performance and the setting. We had a picnic before the play. I can't wait for the next performance.

Very quaint. Super talented actresses/actors. I'd be mad if I paid full price for a ticket though. A train went by two different times throughout the performance, actors/actresses were walking around in the background, people with outside food/drink were eating loudly, clanking bottles around, very few props used within the performance. It could have been a lot nicer.

Arrived at the venue a little late but it was not a problem. We took a picnic dinner and were able to use a picnic table even though we didn't reserve one. We brought a table candle for ambiance but no open flames are allowed due to safety issues.
The set is simple but nice. The area was small and intimate - plenty of folding chairs if you'd like one. Lying on a blanket up front isnt really an option as the ground slopes away from the stage, and the other grassy area is just too far to see much.
The performance was pretty good. Not great, but enjoyable and professional. They used the aisles as street and the playerss were often out amoungst the audience. Props were minimal, great costumes.
I liked this venue and company as a nice alternative outing. I would go again, maybe not with children who were pretty bored. And you can bring your own wine or beer. Could be a fun evening for a couple.
