Though it's mostly known today as a jazz instrument, the saxophone was originally developed for classical musicians, and there are few better classical saxophonists today than Ashu. The wildly talented and charaismatic performer has played at New York's Carnegie Hall and Zurich's Tonhalle, and performed with some of North America and Europe's premier orchestras. He even won the Musical Olympus International Festival Audience Award in St. Petersburg, Russia -- beating out the First Prize winners of the world's foremost violin, piano and voice competitions in a shocking upset. Ashu, who earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in saxophone performance from Northwestern University, plays solo and orchestral concerts around the globe. His repertoire includes works composed for solo saxophone by soprano and alto sax works by Debussy, Villa-Lobos, and Glazunov, and his own arrangements of works by Piazzolla, Rachmaninoff, and even Ennio Morricone. This was the oddest "performance". First we waited outside as they had tables pushed up almost all the way to the door asking people to sign up for their mailing list and a raffle. The sound was not good- very difficult to understand what was being said. I'm sorry, but the comedians weren't that funny. It felt like that if they got a laugh they would continue the same joke over and over. Although we both won raffle items I found this to be weird. As another person commented, the appreciation of their sponsors with flowers was a nice gesture, but it did last way too long. This was better than just sitting at home and I did get the tickets on comp, but don't think I would attend Clean Comedy III if they decide to do this again. Goldstar is awesome and we will continue to look for other performances to attend. We especially like community theatre.
This show is family friendly, but not recommended for young children.
