It's "comedy tonight" in Stephen Sondheim's laugh-out-loud, six-time Tony-winning musical, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Travel to ancient Rome and experience the zany antics of Pseudolus, a slave on a quest for freedom. This slapstick musical sings and dances its way through mistaken identities, a house full of courtesans and an elaborate web of lies that all lead to an uproarious night in the theater. Sondheim and comic writer Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H, Tootsie) seamlessly combine situations from the timeless comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the fast-paced, slapstick energy of classic vaudeville to create a nonstop entertainment extravaganza. Winner of the Tony Award for best musical, Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most heralded musicals of all time.
Fiddler tells the story of Tevye, an indomitable hard-luck dairyman living in the quaint Russian village of Anatevka in 1905. Oppressed and overworked, Tevye is lovable for his cheerful courage in the face of his troubles, which include his poverty; his sharp-tongued wife; and his five daughters, three of whom are of marriageable age—and he is unable to provide dowries for them.
With one of the greatest Broadway scores, this beloved musical includes such songs as “If I Were A Rich Man,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” and “Sunrise, Sunset.” Funny and wonderful, exuberant and touching, this show glows with magic.
