It's "comedy tonight" in Stephen Sondheim's laugh-out-loud, six-time Tony-winning musical, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Travel to ancient Rome and experience the zany antics of Pseudolus, a slave on a quest for freedom. This slapstick musical sings and dances its way through mistaken identities, a house full of courtesans and an elaborate web of lies that all lead to an uproarious night in the theater. Sondheim and comic writer Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H, Tootsie) seamlessly combine situations from the timeless comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the fast-paced, slapstick energy of classic vaudeville to create a nonstop entertainment extravaganza. Based on the popular 1980s film starring Kevin Bacon, Footloose is the classic tale of teenage rebellion and spirit. When Ren McCormick and his mother move from Chicago to a small Oklahoma town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he’s not prepared for are the rigorous local laws, including a ban on dancing. The show includes the film’s pop hits, such as “Footloose,” “Almost Paradise,” and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy.”
Planning is currently under way in Hollywood for a new movie version starring Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford.
