When the gods search for a "good" person in the Chinese city of Setzuan, they find only greed, dishonesty, and selfishness. Except for Shen Te, a local prostitute who helps all those in need. A musical based on a play by French playwright Marivaux, Triumph of Love premiered on Broadway in 1997 starring Betty Buckley, F. Murray Abraham, and Susan Egan. The story has high style, high notes and high comedy combined with a clever adaptation.
Love can make a woman do strange things. Like lie about her past. Or give up her career for the man she loves. Or throw off her princessly raiment and disguise herself as a young man in order to infiltrate the guarded "men only" palace compound of an exiled prince she admired from afar, who is secretly plotting to murder her and usurp her throne. Such is the tale of this tongue-in-cheek musical.
