Barbra and Frank: The Concert That Never Was

It's a match made in Vegas! Two of the most impressive celebrity impersonators in the business -- Sharon Owens and Sebastian Anzaldo -- pay tribute to two of music's greatest icons -- Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra. In real life, Streisand and Sinatra never performed live together, but in this show, Owens and Anzaldo sing some of the most most memorable music ever written and exchange banter so spot-on to their characters that you feel like you've been transported to the celebrity concert you always wished had happened. For her amazing Streisand impersonation, Owens was winner of the Fox TV show Performing As..., which led to a series of TV appearances and a long run at the Las Vegas Riviera, where she headlined with Anzaldo in Barbra and Frank, The Concert That Never Was. Anzaldo, who has the voice, looks and mannerisms of 'Ol Blue Eyes, was one of the top acts on the Vegas circuit for eight years with his band Wild Life before joining forces with Owens for Barbra and Frank. Unfortunately Jerrie was sick. But her "friends" played on with style and vivacity. So, we enjoyed the afternoon. We would go again in the future.
Recommended highly for a pleasant lunchtime event.
PS: The food was good except for the "chicken sausages" which were filled with "gross meat". El Cid Restaurant should find some other item than "chicken sausage" to serve.

More Information About Jazz Band Jerrie and Friends

Description

Every Sunday afternoon, patrons are entertained by the swift and steady rhythms of 89 year old Jerrie Thill. For nearly 2 decades, this sweet and feisty drummer/vocalist has been holding her own among an onslaught of new performers. Jerrie, a vaudeville veteran who came from Dubuque, Iowa, has played with countless bands over the years including Ada Leonard's Big Band in the 1940's, and the all-female group the Dixie Belles which consisted of 60 to 80 year-olds who once appeared on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson. The original El Cid Sunday brunch began with the Dixie Belles but Jerrie stayed on over the years with her trio Jazz Au Femme and now with Jerrie and Friends. Her signature song "When You're Smiling", has been re-release as a single CD. Jerrie's Trio includes Stay Rowles and Marty Harris (who has played with artists ranging from Anita O'Day to Diana Ross).

Born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1917 Jerrie Thill has been part of the commercial music business since age 18 and began as a drummer-singer- band leader in the Chicago area. Between 1935 and 1938, she was the vaudeville leader of an eight piece all-girl swing band that toured on the Pantages and Gus Sun Times Circuits. Just before World War II she was the drummer with the Hollywood Sweethearts and during the early war years part of the Villa Maree Trio (a supper club) in Dubuque. The later war years found her again in Chicago as a vocalist with the Danny Fergueson Society Orchestra and in 1945 she relocated to Southern California where she appeared as the house drummer at the Flamingo Night Club in Hollywood (1945-1952) and later with the Ada Leonard All-Girl Orchestra during their West Coast tours (1953-1954). Jerrie continued on the road with the Biltmore Girls during the mid-1950s and for the next three decades was a much in-demand drummer and vocalist with small jazz ensembles. In 1974, she joined Peggy Gilbert's Dixie Belles and for the next twenty years performed with that ensemble throughout Southern California including an appearance on the Johnny Carson Show and guest appearances on network television shows such as Golden Girls, Married with Children and Trapper John. Today, as an octogenarian, Jerrie Thill continues to sing and perform with just as much passion and plan as she has done during the past seventy years.

Stacey Rowles - is a trumpeter and flugelhorn player who grew up on a steady dose of jazz and Motown as the middle child of pianist, Jimmy Rowles. She first performed professionally as a teenager at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Stacey has performed with some of the giants like Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Tommy Flanagan, the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra and was a member of Maiden Voyage and its quintet spin-off, The Jazz Birds. Stacey can be heard playing along with Jerrie Thill and friends at various L.A. venues.
