Set at the turn of the century, Motl Mendl, who's entranced by the flickering silent images on his father's cinematograph, makes a small Jewish community in remote Eastern European his camera's focus. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl - now a famed American film director - looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams. With The Artist up for the Best Picture Oscar, this National Theatre Live broadcast gives you a fictionalized story on the beginnings of silent film. Learn More

Guy Adkins as Oscar Linquist stole the show with his rendition of how a claustrophobic would behave in a stuck elevator. The dancing was very well done but the story had an unexpected and unfortunate ending.Written on Oct 23 2006
