Full of sizzling songs, seductive dance numbers and a story that packs a powerful punch in our fame-obsessed society, Atlanta Lyric Theatre's production of Chicago tells a tantalizing tale set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s. It's the story of convicted murderers Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who will stop at nothing to get the attention of the press and celebrity attorney Billy Flynn. Their malicious crimes turn them into media darlings, producing a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids. A smash on Broadway and in its film adaptation, this biting satire features the unforgettable music of John Kander and Fred Ebb, including "All That Jazz," "Cell Block Tango" and many more hits. I took my parents to see this show and they enjoyed reliving the bittersweet memories of their own upbringing: the meager funds, the hard labor with helping on the farm, the richness of food and family, but mostly; the abundance of love. The same qualities that were expressed by Sam's book and portrayed by the actors. The screenwriter's adaptation was a bit dry and needed more humor but all-in-all, the show was a walk down a southern boys (or girls) memory lane.
