In the bizarre and completely entertaining world of this play, well-to-do heiress Beatrice lures bounty hunter John to her apartment via an ad offering a substantial reward to any man who will interest, move and seduce her. John is up to the task, and willing to climb the stairs to the 33rd floor of her high-rise where the elevator is broken. What's in store for him in her nearly empty apartment is not a typical boy-meets-girl story. Instead, he's faced with a challenging game of push and pull, full of intense drama and punctuated by Beatrice's inexplicable bouts of narcolepsy. Written in French by Carole Fréchette and translated by John Murrell, John & Beatrice is a masterful play about the difficulty of connection and the meaning of love.

This is an interesting show dealing with the relationship of this couple. Both of the actors did a superb job! This theater company does great work and is worth the trip to Fairfax.

The Washington Post called "John and Beatrice" a "mixed bag." The critic was being overly generous. My friend and I both hated it, despite good efforts put in by both the actor and actress. This story is not about love; rather, it is about a completely dysfunctional nonrelationship in which the woman, who is in dire need of the services of a psychiatrist, tries to force love to happen with a bounty hunter who is totally devoid of emotion. I was hoping that at least one of the characters displayed some growth, some change, or something that could make me want to root for him or her, but neither did. They ended the play as empty as they began it. I suppose there was no intermission in order to maintain the tension of the script, but in reality, I believe most of the audience would have escaped had there been one. If we're glad we saw "John and Beatrice," it's only so we can fully appreciate the truly excellent shows we've seen in the past.
