Acclaimed violinist Leila Josefowicz and choreographer Jessica Lang and her dance company join the National Symphony Orchestra to perform Pulitzer winner John Adams' Violin Concerto in the final program of the NEW MOVES: symphony + dance festival. Called "a master of visual composition" by Dance Magazine, Lang sets original choreography to Adams' melodic and colorful 1993 work. Josefowicz's playing has been described as being full of "zest and fiery personality" (Chicago Sun-Times) -- a perfect match for this expressive, breathless work. Also on the program are Aaron Copland's Pulitzer-winning masterpiece of pioneer life, Appalachian Spring; Michael Daugherty's Superman-inspired Red Cape Tango; and Sinfonia No. 4 ("Strands") by George Walker, the first African-American composer to win the Pulitzer. Hadn't been to the circus in over 20 years, maybe even 30, but brother, sister, and 12 yr old nephew were visiting from out of town, so this was originally planned for the nephew's sake. Turned out to be a definite blast; I think we adults enjoyed it just as much as my nephew. The aerial trapeze is always my favorite, and a triple somersault, flawlessly executed, was something to behold. The "lion/tiger tamer" had several humorous "twists" to it. There are numerous acrobatics throughout the show, but the acrobatics done on galloping horses had you shaking your head in amazement. I'm not one much to emote, but I heartily recommend this show for young and old alike.
