In this Pulitzer and Tony-nominated comedy by Craig Lucas, a whirlwind romance and marriage takes a startling turn when an mysterious old man congratulates the bride with a kiss. With this kiss, Rita (the bride) and the man have what could be described as a Twilight Zone moment that sends Rita and her would-be husband on a mysterious journey, as they test the true strength of their love, beyond the surface connections that first drew them to one another. Prelude to a Kiss was commissioned and originally staged by South Coast Repertory in January 1988. The play later went on to Broadway and was made into a feature film starring Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan. Staged Cinema Productions' performance of the play is directed by David Chorley. Learn More

Great show !! Very funny !! Rick Franklin was his usual terrific self.....Wonderful cast .... A lot of effort went into the production and it showed. The Maverick theatre was a very nice venue with a bar area with seating to relax before the show. If you haven't been there before bring the map that is on the Maverick website. You'll need it.

This stage version is modified from the last film treatment but it did not suffer and was very enjoyable. The cast was very good, especially for a small theater. Kristin Meerdink was excellent as the female lead and Nathan Makaryk showed his versatility in playing several comic roles very well. This is definitely a show worth seeing.

I really enjoyed the play. It was funny, flowed well and was well cast. It was great how they added a personal touch, by using the names of local cities. The connection between the bride and that of her parents was very believable.

I have yet to see a play at the Maverick Theater that I didn't enjoy!

More Information About Father of the Bride

Description

Father of the Bride began 59 years ago as a novel; then, in 1950, Spencer Tracy and Liz Taylor starred in the film; from there CBS aired it as a TV series from 1961 to ’62; then it returned to the screen with Steve Martin in ’91 and finally Caroline Francke adapted it to the stage. It seems the story of Father of the Bride has been told in every median except radio. For anyone that has been involved in or put together a wedding it’s no surprise why audiences continue to enjoy this timeless tale. In this stage version director David Chorley has incorporated video footage and a wedding singer to bridge many of the scenes. Since the story’s inception, wedding videos and singing DJs have become common fare. Using these elements, Chorley has helped update the material.

The story still remains the same with the befuddled father, George Banks, having a hard time letting go of his only daughter, Annie, when she unexpectedly announces her plans to wed. Suddenly the Banks family finds themselves consumed with Annie's wedding, which they plan to hold at their own home. George finds himself sinking into a financial hole, particularly with the elaborate arrangements planned by their European wedding consultant.
