Hairspray: Tony-Winning Musical Bops Back to the '60s
Musical Theatre Orange County celebrates its 10th anniversary with an exuberantly entertaining production of the Broadway musical Hairspray, starring several of its alumni. Plus-sized dreamer Tracy Turnblad becomes a dancer on a popular local TV show, transforming herself from a shunned outsider to a true teen celebrity, and then setting out to triumph over both snotty teen queens and racial segregation. Set in 1962 Baltimore and based on the movie by John Waters, the production won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score, for such Mark Shaiman-penned hit songs as "Welcome to the '60s," "You Can't Stop the Beat" and "Good Morning Baltimore." And then it was turned back into a popular 2007 movie, starring John Travolta and Nikki Blonsky. But there's nothing like seeing this always energetic and upbeat musical live on stage.
