Wealthy plantation owner Big Daddy's family has gathered to celebrate his 65th birthday, while sparing him the news that he's dying of cancer. As one son, a former football hero, mysteriously retreats from his desirable but sexually frustrated wife, his money-hungry brother and sister-in-law plot to secure more than their fair share of the family fortune. Lucky Stiff is a difficult musical to describe the best I can do when asked is say, “imagine a story where Weekend at Bernie’s meets Monty Python, toss in some elements of The Godfather and Feydeau-like farce, and then add a score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.”
Confused? Don’t be. Once you see it, you’ll see what I mean. Despite the somewhat macabre premise, Lucky Stiff is enchanting a fast paced romp, a timeless story about falling in love, and a gentle reminder that we can’t live life fully unless we take a chance once in a while. Luck must be seized when the opportunity presents itself. Life is a gamble. It involves risk, and sometimes comes with pain and hurt but to “win big,” you must be willing to take a chance. And, when you do, your life can change for the better!
