In this Pulitzer and Tony-nominated comedy by Craig Lucas, a whirlwind romance and marriage takes a startling turn when an mysterious old man congratulates the bride with a kiss. With this kiss, Rita (the bride) and the man have what could be described as a Twilight Zone moment that sends Rita and her would-be husband on a mysterious journey, as they test the true strength of their love, beyond the surface connections that first drew them to one another. Prelude to a Kiss was commissioned and originally staged by South Coast Repertory in January 1988. The play later went on to Broadway and was made into a feature film starring Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan. Staged Cinema Productions' performance of the play is directed by David Chorley. Learn More

The cast and production were first rate. The play is not side splittingly funny as you might assume. It's more of an energetic philosophical debate about the essence of genius and those who leave their mark on the world. Fortunately, taken like that, the play for me was quite interesting.

The performance was very well done; the actors were outstanding. The location of the venue was not great - I had some difficulty finding parking --aside from that the venue itself is really cool inside.

Very intriguing play. I found many of the "punchlines" didn't get the response as possibly intended. It was more focused on thought rather than one liners thus it made the experience more interesting than fun.

More Information About Picasso at the Lapin Agile

Description

Picasso at the Lapin Agile, written by Steve Martin, debuted in 1994 and has since been a staple of modern American theatre. Returning to his roots after 20 years of movies, Martin delivers a knockout punch with a style of wit that belongs solely to him. Since writing Picasso, Martin went on to write the successful plays The Underpants and Wasp, the former of which debuted at The Geffen Playhouse. Martin, who’s never been one to shy away from uncanny stories, writes a play that’s fast, funny and surprisingly powerful.

Blending Martin’s early non-sequitur comedy and his sophisticated story telling, Picasso tells the unusual story of Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso meeting in a legendary tavern on the eve of their biggest innovations in their respective fields. The two geniuses map out the century together with the help of other 20th century heavy hitters making surprise appearances.
