Maverick Theater is the first OC storefront theater to stage RENT, and they spare no expense to pull it off. Jonathan Larson's Tony and Pulitzer-winning musical, based on Puccini's La Boheme, tells the emotional tale of a community of young artists in New York's East Village struggling to deal with AIDS and other modern issues. RENT mixes the classic themes of love and loss, pain and hope, and a need to belong with an energetic score and contemporary attitude.

Peter Morgan's Tony Award-nominated play that spawned the critically acclaimed 2006 film pits jet-setting British TV talk-show host David Frost against disgraced former president Richard Nixon in a battle of wits and wills. Desperate to regain his slipped standing as a serious journalist, Frost seeks to elicit from the Watergate-plagued Nixon a detailed explanation and apology, while the ever-political former president has his own agenda. This fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the famous 1977 series of interviews dissects the electrifying battle between Nixon and Frost, revealing both mens insecurities, ego and sense of dignity as they face off in a historic encounter that ultimately changes them both. Great story, solid acting, good singing. I dropped a star for the Rent soundtrack itself which I find to be lacking memorable songs.

However, the Maverick Theater always delivers great productions that defy the small size of the space they have to work with. I would recommend ANY show at this great little theater!

This was a terrific production! Great voices and acting throughout the entire cast. It was wonderful to see "Rent" in such an intimate setting and to catch alot of what was going on that was missed at the Schubert or OC Pavilion. The only flaw is one that plagues so many shows and that is mic/sound problems, but they weren't enough to detract from the great job everyone did.

Highly recommended!!

Maverick's "Rent" was impressive. The cast put out a great performance.

I was mezmerized by the emsemble's singing of "Seasons of Love". They all sang their hearts out. It was so moving and emotional.

My favorite segment was "Tango". The singing and choreography was delightful.

I would like to recognize the band that was off to the right in a loft. You are not aware that they are there. Their music was an integral part of the show.

Viva La Boheme! Great job! An outstanding performance! Mahalo.

More Information About RENT

Description

RENT, Jonathan Larson's revolutionary rock opera and one of the longest running shows on Broadway hits the non-equity stage for the first time in Orange County. The Maverick is the first storefront theatre to tackle this popular production and has spared no expense to pull it off. If you happened to have seen the final tour of the Broadway production last year, then you gotta experience RENT in the intimate surroundings of a small theater; much like the way the author intended it.

RENT is based on Puccini's classic opera La Bohème and tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of AIDS. RENT is the winner of the 1996 Pulitzer Prize and the Tony award for best musical.
