The Tempest, Shakespeare's most supernatural play, was adapted in 1956 to the sci-fi film masterpiece "Forbidden Planet," where the world first met Robbie the Robot. Return to the Forbidden Planet retains the story of the film, but delivers all of its characters' dialogue in Shakespearean verse, save for when they sing "Good Vibrations," "All Shook Up" and other '50s and '60s chart-toppers.

In this Pulitzer and Tony-nominated comedy by Craig Lucas, a whirlwind romance and marriage takes a startling turn when an mysterious old man congratulates the bride with a kiss. With this kiss, Rita (the bride) and the man have what could be described as a Twilight Zone moment that sends Rita and her would-be husband on a mysterious journey, as they test the true strength of their love, beyond the surface connections that first drew them to one another. Prelude to a Kiss was commissioned and originally staged by South Coast Repertory in January 1988. The play later went on to Broadway and was made into a feature film starring Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan. Staged Cinema Productions' performance of the play is directed by David Chorley. Learn More

On paper, a combination of 60's rock and roll, 50's campy Science Fiction and verses from the Bard all wrapped up in a show sounds ludicrous. But I can assure you, it somehow all comes together to produce a really fun evening. Don't miss it...............

What a fun, clever, campy show! The cast is great, and the set and costumes are so good for a low-budget production. The abundant rock & roll songs are a perfect and amusing fit with the show. I wish lots of people would go see it before it closes on the 27th!

The Maverick theater is always a great place for a show. This particular play would be most appreciated by a futuristic Shakespearean aficionado. I am not but still had a good time. The cast was good with some members excelling. I will see many more plays at the Maverick and would recommend the venue to friends.

More Information About Return to the Forbidden Planet

Description

Return to the Forbidden Planet is the classic Shakespearean, outer-space, rock ‘n’ roll musical! During an asteroid storm, Captain Tempest and his crew are pulled onto the mysterious planet D’yllria by the long-banished scientist Prospero, who lives on the planet with only his daughter, Miranda. When he discovers his whistleblower ex-wife is on board the ship, he drinks his dangerous creation, Potion X, causing nightmares of his mind to come to life and attack the ship’s crew with long slimy tentacles. Can Prospero undo the damage he’s caused? Can Captain Tempest and Miranda fall in love and live happily ever after? Will the ship get off the planet before it explodes?
