In this Pulitzer and Tony-nominated comedy by Craig Lucas, a whirlwind romance and marriage takes a startling turn when an mysterious old man congratulates the bride with a kiss. With this kiss, Rita (the bride) and the man have what could be described as a Twilight Zone moment that sends Rita and her would-be husband on a mysterious journey, as they test the true strength of their love, beyond the surface connections that first drew them to one another. Prelude to a Kiss was commissioned and originally staged by South Coast Repertory in January 1988. The play later went on to Broadway and was made into a feature film starring Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan. Staged Cinema Productions' performance of the play is directed by David Chorley. Learn More

Description

Nominated for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize, Rising Water is a west of the Mississippi premiere written by Loyola University New Orleans professor, playwright and author John Biguenet. Biguenet began Rising Water in March 2006 as an expansion of a column he wrote for The New York Times titled "How They Died." Surprised at the number of deaths from drowning, dehydration and exhaustion, Biguenet began to explore how individuals were trapped by the levee failures and what it was like for people who were awakened in the night by rising water, rushed to attics and roofs and then waited for help that never came.

In Rising Water, a couple awakens in the middle of the night to find their pitch-dark house filling with water and they rush to the attic. Trapped with a lifetime of possessions and memories, they wait for rescue, speculating over what has happened and exploring their relationship, assailed by a flood of secrets and feelings. The show stars Rick and Veda Franklin whose daughter’s home was flooded during Katrina. Veda became aware of the show while visiting her daughter and brought the project to the Maverick. This will be first production of Rising Water since its world premiere in New Orleans.
